– Simplicity in Movement and Purpose-There are no fancy techniques in Iaido. It is one of the martial arts that I always go back to and practice whenever I have the opportunity (and a sword.) It is better to experience the art for yourself. While Iaido as an art is much, much deeper than this, I will not write about it here as that will take too many pages and I might bore you. You strike while unsheathing, and you finish your assailant with your next blow. In addition to the usual Aikido lesson, he would take about twenty minutes to teach us about Iaido and Jo-Jutsu (short staff.) The beauty of Iaido as a martial art lies in its simplicity and its focused approach to self-defense. I studied Iaido as a supplementary art to Aikido (the 2nd time around,) with Sensei Bong Achas. The more you practice Iaido, the more you will understand the meaning behind its techniques. It is a beautiful art that reminds me of Japanese gardens. Each technique begins with an unsheathing attack (or attacks in the case of forms against multiple attackers) or block, a killing blow, blood removal (from the blade,) and re-sheathing. It differs from Kendo and Kenjutsu because all techniques start with the katana still in its sheath. It was developed to counter sudden sword rushes and ambushes from single or multiple attackers.
